The Effect of Music Therapy and Aromatherapy with Chamomile-Lavender Essential Oil on the Anxiety of Clinical Nurses: A Randomised and Double-Blind Clinical Trial

Nurses may be anxious for many reasons – including needing to respond to critical care needs and emergencies, and this anxiety can affect their professional performance.

Non-pharmacological interventions, as a safe method, can reduce anxiety. This random controlled, double blind study aimed to determine the effect of music therapy and aromatherapy with chamomile - lavender essential oil on the anxiety of clinical nurses.

120 nurses from clinical wards of Besat Hospital in Sanandaj, Iran, were selected between 2018 and 2019 by purposeful sampling. The samples were randomly assigned to three groups with different interventions plus a control group as follows;

  • Music therapy
  • Aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil and music therapy
  • Aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil
  • Control group

Analysis

The anxiety of nurses was measured based on the Beck Anxiety Inventory before the intervention and after three work shifts. The data were analysed using the SPSS v.22 software. One-way ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses.

Results

The findings showed that the mean scores of the anxiety of nurses after the intervention in the three intervention groups significantly lower than that of the control group (56.08) (p < 0.0001)

Music therapy group - 39.28

Aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil - 37.82

Both music therapy and aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil - 40.03

The results showed that the interventions of music therapy and aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil could reduce the anxiety of nurses. Therefore, it is recommended to use music therapy and aromatherapy with chamomile-lavender essential oil to reduce the anxiety of nurses in the clinical setting.

In the past 30 years, prediabetes (elevated fasting or post-meal blood sugar below the levels required for diagnosis of type 2 diabetes) has grown into a major epidemic affecting nearly one in three adults. Previous studies have shown that combining aerobic exercise and diet can restore normal glucose levels in these individuals. However, the effects of resistance exercise – an important alternative to aerobic exercise – on post-meal blood sugar concentrations has not been investigated.

A low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) or “ketogenic” diet has grown in popularity due to its ability to increase the rate of fat burning during exercise. For elite athletes this comes at the expense of athletic performance.
