TCM – Herbs: Value of Seeds Grown in Outer Space?

Researchers in China have experimented with breeding seeds for Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbs (TCM) in space.

The researchers report that the growth cycle of the seeds for the two, high demand (and scarce), plant species they selected, could be shortened after being bred in space.

The company behind this experiment, the Chengde Jingfukang Pharmaceutical Group Co, a medical company is now getting ready to breed the Amur Cork-tree Bark and Atractylodes chinensis seeds at its base.

The company executives believe that this process will lead to a shorter growth cycle for the seeds -  now they are back on earth – as they will have experienced ‘gene variation’ in space - and will have strengthen their active ingredients.

Following a plant-based diet could help decrease the severity of COVID-19, according to a new major study published in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health journal. The study investigated links between the disease and different dietary patterns.

A new study led by the Centre for Nutraceuticals at the University of Westminster shows that pink drinks can help to make you run faster and further compared to clear drinks.

It is estimated that up to 152 million people worldwide will be living with Alzheimer's disease (AD) by 2050. Thus far, there are no pharmaceutical drugs that impact either the prevention or reversal of cognitive decline.

National and international guidelines recommend replacing the amount of time spent being sedentary with physical activity to improve health. This message is especially important in the face of COVID-19, as overall sedentary behaviors have increased substantially.
